And yes, a 'good' character does not have to be boring at all. 'Good' is so narrowly defined these days -- it's used as a kind of negative label for characters who are impossibly perfect. Yet there are many characters who are essentially good and who are wonderful to read about. D'Artagnan springs to mind: rash and impulsive, yes, but also kind, decent, loyal.
