Obviously not having read the book, I'm curious. Outsider gaze done well is good of course, but it still seems (from the Amazon page at least) like it may have the outsider protagonist acting as an agent in a foreign culture; ie. the white person is special and saves the day, or white person saves the foreign culture from itself plot. I really hope it isn't, but that is the big cringe-worthy danger or Mary Sueism when you're writing another culture, and from your own post I'm not sure this was avoided.
